Like in many airforces the UH-1 is the workhorse of the Argentine Army.
Recently some new UH-1 were delivered coming from US Army stocks. This
one is flying in the neighbourhood of its home base Campo de Mayo and is
equipped with rocket pods to train the pilots in ground attack missions.
All 23 OV-1D Mohawks are assigned to Escuadrón de Aviación
de Exploratión y Reconocimiento 601 based at Campo de Mayo. Problems
with the ejection seat kept these aircraft grounded for more than a year.
Recently 12 OV-1 Mohawks are back in flying condition, enough for the requested
Army tasks. Because of a limited budget the remaining aircraft are wfu
and used for spares.
For transport and parachute dropping the Army has 3 G-222s. All transport
tasks are done by Escuadrón de Aviación de Apoyo 603. Other
types in this squadron are the Cessna T-207, DHC-6 Twin Otter, Merlin 4,
Casa-212 and the Sabreliner.
The Citation is together with the Beech 65 Queen Air flying for the Instituto
Geografico Militar. This unit is based on Camo de Mayo.
This badge is painted on te fuselage of the Cessna Citation. The main task
of this small Army unit is aerial photography.
The Hiller UH-12 is a rare helicopter in military service. The Army of
Argentina is using 8 of these small helicopters for elementary helicopter
training (Escuela de Aviación de Ejercito). Campo de Mayo is an
enormous base housing almost all the different Army Aviation units. Spread
over the country the Army has some small units, mostly equipped with only
a few aircraft. When needed reinforcements come from Campo de Mayo.
Only one Sabreliner is in use, mainly for VIP flights. The pilots love
this plane because of its flying characteristics.
