In the cold-war period the Hungarian Air Force acquired at least 130 MiG-21's
in different versions. An economy campaign in 1996 reduced the AF drastically.
Currently around 22 MiG-21's (bis and UM version) are operational and divided
over two squadrons (47 HVO) based on Papa. This MiG-21bis is one of the
survivors.
The MiG-23 was another victim of the decreasing budget. The last MiG-23
flight took place on December 4th, 1996, and the remaining aircraft are
stored on Papa. Two MiG's are seen here just a few seconds before take
off and standing on the runway of Papa with full afterburner.
The MiG-29 and the MiG-21 are the only fighters left in the Hungarian AF
inventory. Two squadrons (59HVO) of the Fulcrum are based on Kecskemet.
28 MiG-29's were delivered in 1993, including 6 duals.
The union of East and West Gemany resulted in a reorganized German Air
Force making many aircraft superfluous, including the L-39 Albatros. 20
of the ex NVA L-39's were acquired by the Hungarian AF and this picture
is taken shortly after arrival on Kecskemet Air Base in 1994. Recently
19 L-39's were upgraded on Tököl.
In 1996 the Su-22's received an extensive overhaul. Shortly after this
the decision was made to withdrawn the type and on February 4th. 1997 the
Su-22 made its last flight for the Hungarian AF. The remaining Su-22's
are parked on Papa in flying condition and the AF is trying to sell these
aircraft. This Su-22U3 is parked on the platform of Taszar in 1991.
In many (former) communistic Air Forces the Mi-8 is the workhorse of the
Air Force and used for a variety of missions. The Mi-8's are based on Szolnok
and Szentkiralyszabadja were this picture is made.
The only cargo plane in use is the Antonov An-26, based on Szolnok.
13 were delivered and most of them are flying in a grey color scheme, but
a few are white.
