The Brazilian Air Force's training center is based on Pirassununga Air
Base in the São Paulo province. This enormous base has three runways
and houses in total over 100 aircraft. One of them is this T-27 Tucano
seen during formation training.
The student starts his career on this Neiva T-25 Universal trainer from
2 Esquadrão de Instrução Aérea (EIA). The students
fly 16 hours and with good results they can continue the course.
In the third year students start to fly the T-27 Tucano. On this picture
the students are going to fly a four formation training flight.
The T-27 Tucano is a very good training aircraft and is in use in many
Air Forces. The flying characteristics can be compared with many jet trainers,
against lower costs.
This T-27 is returning from a formation flight. All AFA Tucano's are designated
to 1 EIA and are painted in this orange/white scheme. The T-27 is also
in use as light attack aircraft or interceptor of drug transport
planes. In this case they are camouflaged (brown/green) or air defence
grey.
Very famous in Brazil is "Esquadrilha de Fumaca" (Smoke Squadron), the
aerobatic team of the Air Force. They operate with special painted
T-27's and are based on Pirasunnunga.
No doubt about the name of the squadron as demonstrated here. The squadron
is performing almost 200 shows a year in South America.
In their spare time the students can fly different gliders. This one is
an aggressive looking KW 1b2 Quero Quero (FAB type designation Z-16.)
This Gloster Meteor is one of the four monuments on Pirassununga Air
Base. Also preserved on this base is a T-6, a T-23 and a T-33.
